All hail to the dustman, for keeping our streets clean. You’re doing a great job, Dustbin Man. Keep doing what you’re doing (though the pay is atrocious). All hail to the dustman. Dustbin Man. Doctors & Nurses are keeping our blood in. Attend to our tendons. We owe you our lives. Now there will be cuts, so you’ll have to work harder. “But we’re in this together” says Nowhere man. Hooray for the Henrys and their champagne receptions. Don’t go paying your taxes - that would be rude. A return to the 80s and all that it stood for. All hail to the dustman. Dustbin Man.

You’re such a selfish little hog and I’d love to hear you fry. I shouldn’t even think that way, I hear you cry. But what you think is of no consequence to me. But what you think is of no consequence to me. I’ll chew you up and spit you out. I’ll chew you up and spit you out. Maybe that’s something that you should think about? Celebrate good times on your own. They’re rolling over your head. DIRTY LITTLE FILTH PIG! DIRTY LITTLE FILTH PIG! Sailing down the sleaze in your head. What’s that soapy residue in your black heart? Dress it up which way you want you little arse. If I was scum I’d still be worth 10x what you’re to anyone. You make me want to puke. Celebrate good times on your own. They’re rolling over your head. DIRTY LITTLE FILTH PIG! DIRTY LITTLE FILTH PIG! Sailing down the sleaze in your head. (Such a selfish little hog, I’d like to see you fry. Stab me in the back? I’d like to see you try)

I can see you coming down my strasse. It’s been years now, well who cares? Come closer, let’s see your little dance. You should have killed me when you had the chance. No I can’t, I can’t help you out. My floor is not a place for you to stay. No you can’t, you can’t drive my car. This house is not a place for you to play. In your finery you just can’t afford. You’re an ideas man? Well, how droll. Countless friendships you leave burning and charred. As with insults, you push the knives in hard. No I can’t, I can’t help you out. My floor is not a place for you to stay. No you can’t, you can’t drive my car. This house is not a place for you to play. No I cannot help you out. No you cannot drive my car.

Freak Show 05:13
We moved to the city one by one. Until it pushed us out, all our pennies to the pound. Although gradually we all moved away, We meet twice a night secretly in my mind. And though we don’t always have the time, It all seems so delicately entwined. One bottle of wine at a time. One lucky scratch coupon away from retired. And I know that I can be cruel sometimes. Maybe we drink too much, for the time that has passed? Will it be soon that you’re here again? Well, we’ll still always have this time. Oh little Stu, don’t leave us now. There’s so much fun still to be had…

John Snow 04:04
Something’s lurking in the water but you still look to the sky. A million dots descend on Broad Street. In the air it can’t be found. Something’s waiting underground. Waterworks of Southwark & Vauxhall are working on the truth. For which they’re duty bound. Evil’s lurking underground. Keep your faith in the good doctor. 61 go to the pyre, germs spread like a fire. The clue you’ll find is in the handle. Your critics cut you down. Evil’s lurking underground. Golden Square is going down. It could be creeping through the air? When the doctor calls. A million distant eyes. Signs and symptoms to be found. Golden Square is going down. Come and look just 3ft down. Evil’s lurking underground.

Kathleen, my only one, darling I love you so. All my kisses and all that’s mine, my darling they are yours. I took the 9 o’clock bus home, I was in bed by 10. My dearest, darling George, Mind that you’re a good boy, no carrying on with office girls. My heart is held only for you. My sweetheart won’t you tell me, do you still love me too? On you I must impress. (The first time in so long) You’re all I think about. (With just the 2 of us, my ducks). Are you aware, I simply adore you? I hope you feel I love you, do you still love me too?
7.
It’s going to drive me insane, won’t you drive me to work? It must get better than this. Can’t take another hour, or the following six, can I gets-a-gets-a cup of coffee? A nice young girl or a bored house wife, I can’t even get a sins of the flesh? At the end of the day I guess the cards are all marked? I’m gonna burn it down…FIRE! Stand up and greet the rabbid hoards …and I hate shop (I am shop) You see we’re dead behind our eyes …and I hate shop (I am shop) Listen, listen, listen to the boring man he has no friends so you’ll have to do. Have you looked into your father’s eyes, does he no longer have a son? Grab your coat, grab your bag and run, don’t even wait until the day has gone. Let’s face it, you’re here until the day you want to…DIE! Stand up and greet the rabbid hoards …and I hate shop (I am shop) You see we’re dead behind our eyes …and I hate shop (I am shop) You thought your life would be much more …and I hate shop (I am shop) And lunch you take from 3 till 4 …and I hate shop (I am shop) Go! Woo! No! ARGHHH! Pledge allegiance to the the store. Get a gun (get a pricing gun) Fiddle Sticks. No! I hate shop (I am shop)

Judged by a jury of my piers, I thought “that” that was fine. My dabs all over the shop. Where was my alibi? They gave me 9 years. They gave me 9 years. They gave me 9 long years. They gave me 9 years. (I’ll be out in 3).
9.
Freedom restored on a very short leash. Bob & Mark leave behind the closed door. I have my records, books and a chair. The bare walls ignore me all the same. If I was a proud man (or even a little bit brave), I’d make such a fuss. Oh wouldn’t you be proud? I’ve got freedom but I can’t go home. Yeah, I’ve got freedom but I can’t go home. Tired of all the ties, bringing me down. The Crystal Palace used to sit on that hill, before it burned to the ground below. If I told you the truth, this place doesn’t exist. I wasn’t around so you can’t blame me. If I asked nicely, would you be prisoner #2? Maybe I’d stand it if you couldn’t stand it too? Come and get me and take me home. Come along and take me home. Come and get me and take me home. Tired of all the ties, bringing me down. Come and get me and take me home. Come along and take me home.
10.
Don’t sell the bed, let’s scorch the earth with fire instead. Don’t tell me how you think it’s water when you know it’s bread. Call me blasphemous, you can dine on that at church. Your effect on me is oh so small, so you can save your hurt. Fire & flames, they may burn my face off. But they cannot singe my happiness - oh no! Let’s be blasphemous, then we’ll go our separate ways. I’m not the idiot you think I am, I have been to school. I used to like that face, even when it made me want to cut my own. I see the years meant nothing, your respect for me somewhat overblown. Fire & flames, they may burn my face off. But they cannot singe my happiness - oh no! As you return to town and the fires are aglow. You pick the pace up, drop your shoes and bags, Well now I think you know. I’ll be sitting in your favourite chair, with the smoke filling up my lungs. All this fuss to be the one who’s one. Oh what have we become? Oh no…

Album: Employee of The Month

Stephen EvEns releases new album, Employee of The Month. Self-produced and recorded at Brixton Hill Studios & Clashnarrow in Helmsdale. Out August 28 via Onomatopoeia (William D. Drake, Barringtone, Hurtling)

Employee of The Month is packed full of candour as post-punk, indie-pop troubadour Stephen EvEns unleashes his alter-ego. This beatnik, indie-punk escapade is accompanied with swooping motoric guitars, squelching effects and crackling sounds that fluctuate from the exotic, improvisational to a deadpan realism. EvEns muses on the futility and injustice of the world, all delivered with a huge wry smile and a glamorous, magical and eccentric delivery.

The album kicks-off with the single Dustbin Man focusing on key workers and the people that knit society together, with booming oscillating guitars and a post-punk disjointedness. Push Yr. Thumb builds on a massive wave of distortion, as the pendulum swings to a passionate accompaniment of off-kilter violins in this post-punk dystopian trajedy. Freak Show guests William D. Drake on piano and accentuates EvEns cabaret style as he re-collects a tale of migration to the city. The vocals fill with a melancholic timbre in a dramatic search for a positive future.

Jon Snow shares vocals with Caroline Gilchrist (Hot Sauce Pony) echoing the sound of Fun Boy Three. A sliding, sludgy drumbeat, as vocals express caution, ‘somethings lurking in the water, but you still look to the sky.’ I Hate Shop re-collects life with a major high street retailer - a glamorous critique - crashing, roaring sounds break the bleak banality of shop life. The Crystal Palace cries, ‘come and get me and take me home,’ is a beautifully crafted piece, delicate and moving.

Multi-instrumentalist and talented artist in his own right Stephen EvEns tours with his own guitar and full band line-up, or occasional casio-tone. In his alter-ego EvEns plans to even the score, reflecting on illustrations of modern day life. Employee of The Month dissembles society and takes a strong harsh look at it, as he puts it back together again.

about

Stephen EvEns UK

He has spent most of his days touring here and there with minor indie celebrity. He has for now shunned the tourbus lifestyle for a wander through his own songbook for a change. Armed with a battered guitar, a casiotone and a few pedals Stephen presents songs that mix the likes of Yo La Tengo & Ivor Cutler with broken friendships and human error. ... more
